Fu For You Fall 2024

When new students enroll, we ask how they found out about the Academy. Most often, people find us through your word of mouth. Referrals have been the lifeblood of the Academy since our inception, and we are ever appreciative as this brings in some wonderful families and individuals. Once we get to know you better, a conversation I always enjoy surrounds what inspired you to train in Kung Fu. For Adult Red Sashes and Junior Yellow Sashes, you answer this question in your first short essay due before your grading. For perhaps more than you might think, inspiration to train is from Kung Fu films.

Seeing martial arts on the big screen has been a driving force for people trying the martial arts for about five decades. Although the first film came out in China the late 1920’s, the popularity of this genre exploded in the 70’s and 80’s. For those my age and older, the flicks from these decades caused a surge in enrollment in Kung Fu. I write about Bruce Lee quite often in these columns. A major reason is that his films have inspired so many of us. The impact of Enter the Dragon (1973) is massive! I’ve connected with countless students that cite his movies and influence as their prime motivation to study the art.

Younger generations were impacted by a somewhat different line of film in the genre—animated martial arts. Not long after I became head instructor in 2006, friends would often discuss with me the impact they thought the rising popularity of UFC was having on our Academy. More people were enrolling, but they were mistaken as to the cause. Truly, it was Disney’s 2008 mega hit, Kung Fu Panda, that caused a whole new generation to start asking their parents to sign them up for Kung Fu lessons! Thankfully, there were many sequels to keep the momentum. For the first couple, we even rented a theatre and went as an Academy.

As an eleven-year-old boy in the early 90’s, it was the popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that caused me to ask my parents to try Kung Fu. On a side note, we screened (er…walled) the latest TMNT flick at our winter Awards Party. My uncle was the biggest martial arts film fan I’ve ever known. He had a huge collection of movies at his house on VHS (look that up kids) that my sister, cousins and I would watch with great joy. I remember him taking me to see Jackie Chan’s, Rumble in the Bronx in theatres too. I grew up in the 80’s, which was full of martial arts films (not all terrific mind you, but there were lots!). The feats of Jean Claude Van
Damme were a daily topic in the schoolyard.

I’m sure a lot of you would be quick to list the Kung Fu films that inspire you! That’s great—grab a bowl of popcorn, get inspired, then get training!

by Sibok Lloyd Fridenburg
Fu For You Fall 2024

A general theme for the fall newsletter seems to be motivation and routine, so be sure to read all the articles.

The beginning of September marks a return to what many see as our normal routine, and in many ways it is. Summer vacations have been relegated to memory, kids are back in school, workplaces are back to full staff, and we are back to our regular routine.

Routine can be both a blessing and a curse. Some people thrive on routine while others despise routine. In some cases, routine can be replaced by the word rut, and rut is synonymous with a lack of motivation. Have you ever thought of your Kung Fu training in terms of a rut? You attend class regularly, usually on the same days, with the same instructors, but something seems to be missing. You don’t get the same enjoyment out of training as you used to, even though nothing has really changed. Well, you’re not alone, it happens to all of us, students and instructors alike. How you react when it comes along is what really matters.

If your motivation has really taken a serious slide you may even be thinking about leaving to find another activity. That’s always a possibility, but don’t be too quick to make that decision. After all you decided to begin training in Kung Fu for a reason and perhaps it’s time to take a journey down memory lane to rediscover that old motivation.

I remember well my Yellow Sash essay where I was asked, why I started Kung Fu training, and why I chose WKFA? Like Sigung my answer to the first question was movies and TV, but unlike Sigung my motivation was the original Kung Fu TV series starring David Caradine and later Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee (I watched it at a theatre that no longer exists when it was first released in the early 70s). As a side note, Bruce Lee was to have starred in the Kung Fu TV series, but was deemed to be “too Chinese” by the producers.

The answer to the second question was simple, WKFA was right next door to where I worked at the time and offered noon classes. But I qualified my answer by referencing the reasons that I chose to stay, citing quality instruction and a welcoming inclusive, supportive, training environment. The same reasons that I have read in countless essays written by students over the years.

Whenever motivation declines go back and read your Yellow Sash essay and ask yourself if the answers to the questions are still valid. Remembering why you began something in the first place might help you apply those reasons to your current circumstances.
If the reasons are basically still valid but you are still lacking motivation, try watching some movies. Or switch up your training routine and expose yourself to different instructors. We are all unique in our teaching style and personalities, while adhering to a common approach of quality instruction and a welcoming inclusive, supportive, training environment.

Returning to the beginning may just be the spark you need to reignite your motivation.

by Chantal Moylan
Fu For You Fall 2024

As we get closer to Fall and the start of school, our routines start to go back to normal. For some this can be difficult, as getting back into the swing of things after time off takes some time and effort. Whether you’ve taken a short break or had a long vacation this summer, returning to Kung Fu can be exciting and a little challenging. But don’t worry! Here’s how you can make your return to Kung Fu smooth, fun, and successful.

The first thing to do when you’re getting back into Kung Fu is to remember the basics. Basics are the foundation of everything you do in Kung Fu, like your stances, punches, kicks, and blocks. Spend some time practicing these at home before your first class back. This will help your body remember the moves, making it easier when you start training again. The biggest key to getting back into a routine is consistency. Try to attend every class. The more consistent you are, the faster you’ll get back into the groove and the better you’ll become.

Practicing Kung Fu at home is a great way to get back into routine faster. You don’t need a lot of space—just enough to practice things like your forms, stances and techniques and shadowboxing. You can even practice outside while the weather is still nice! You can also do your strength requirements (push-ups, crunches/butterflies, squats and super ninjas) to make you stronger. The more you practice at home, the better you’ll feel during class.

Setting goals is another great way to motivate yourself when getting back into routines. What do you want to achieve at Kung Fu this year? Maybe you want to learn a new form, improve your sparring, or earn your next belt. You can write down some of your goals and keep track of the ones you achieve throughout the year. This way, you’ll have some things to work towards and keep you motivated.

It’s also important to remember that it’s okay if you’re not as fast or strong as you were before the break. Your body might need a little time to get back to where it was. Don’t be hard on yourself if you can’t remember all the moves right away. Kung Fu is about patience and persistence. Keep practicing, and you’ll see improvement with each class. Also remember that your Kung Fu instructors and leadership team members are there to help you learn and improve. If you’re unsure about something, don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Another thing to remember is that Kung Fu is not just about hard work; it’s also about having fun. Enjoy your classes and your practice. Kung Fu is a long journey, and every step you take is important. Getting back into Kung Fu after a break might be challenging, but by focusing on the basics, practicing consistently, and setting goals, you’ll quickly regain your rhythm. Remember to be patient with yourself, enjoy the process, and have fun in each class!

by Sifu Charlie Romeo
Fu For You Fall 2024

As junior students, you have two assigned classes every week for training Kung Fu. These classes are essential to your progression as a martial arts student, so it’s important to prioritize them and keep a consistent training schedule. Let’s go over a few tips on how to do this.

Setting Goals

Having clear goals is excellent motivation for maintaining a training schedule. When goals are set, it’s far easier to track your progress, and successes are much more rewarding. Goals can be small such as improving your sidekick, or they can be more significant like finishing the forms for your level or testing for your next rank. (Learn more about setting and achieving goals in my Junior Student Column, Fu For You Spring 2023, Setting Goals and Taking Action.)

Stick to Routine

Having limited available classes per week makes it easy to stick to a consistent training schedule. However, missing one of your two weekly classes is a large setback in your training, as there are few chances to make up the class. Having commitments outside of Kung Fu is expected and encouraged, but it’s beneficial to your progression as a martial artist to work around your existing training schedule and prioritize the classes you have available to you. For example, make sure you complete your homework before Kung Fu class, or set aside time after class, to ensure you’re able to do both. While school should always be prioritized, try to fit your Kung Fu training alongside your schoolwork rather than choosing only one.

Have a Training Partner

It can sometimes be difficult to maintain motivation on your own. Having a training partner that keeps you accountable can help you stay on top of your training. Try to keep some friendly competition with each other; for example, see who can attend more classes next month, or who can do more pushups by the end of the summer. Remember, friendly competition means working with your partner, not against them.

Listen to your Body

This is possibly the most important tip for keeping a consistent schedule. Staying healthy ensures that you’re actively able to continue your training and work toward your goals. This includes staying hydrated, getting fresh air, and eating appropriately. Listening to your body also means knowing when to take a step back so you don’t burn yourself out or worsen injuries. If you have too much on your plate, it’s impossible to keep a consistent schedule long-term. The longer you overfill your schedule, the faster and harder you will burn out. Take time off when needed – this may seem contradictory to my points above, but a few classes off, when necessary, can save you from missing months of training.

Conclusion

Whether you attend 2 classes or 6 classes per week, staying consistent is the best way to regulate and progress in your training. Learning Kung Fu takes more than simply showing up every now and then—it takes time, focus, and consistency to become the best martial artist you can be.

by Sifu D’arcy Langois
Fu For You Fall 2024

At some point in everyone’s Kung Fu journey, there comes a time where you get to experience a…let’s call it an “opportunity to adjust your training.” This is a time when your body decides, “Hey, that’s a bit too much, let’s just chill for a second, okay?” I am, of course, talking about injuries.

It’s a fact of training that the more classes you attend, especially if you are prepping yourself for a grading, the more likely you are to suffer some form of injury. It could be acute, like a sprained joint or a strained muscle. It could also be wear and tear driven in the form of muscle fatigue. In either case, as you start to recognize that something is off, you must act on the “opportunity to adjust”, or you may risk making it far worse in the long term. To that effect, here are three things to consider as you approach this oft-encountered problem.

First and foremost, recognize that the easiest “opportunity to adjust” is to slow, or completely stop, your training for a period of time. This allows your body to put its recovery first, and a brief period of time (or longer in the event of much more serious injuries) can go a long way to making a true comeback in your training. While extremely difficult to do for a dedicated martial artist, sometimes it’s important to realize that a break from training may be the best way forward.

The next, “opportunity to adjust” is to protect the injury from additional harm, while continuing your training. It is possible to adjust your approach to everything we do in Kung Fu to protect yourself from worsening an injury, but it can be difficult if you don’t remain mindful of your actions. What does this look like? Well, some examples to consider: Shoulder injury? Lay off the push-ups for a little bit and find some other way to work your upper body strength requirements. You could take a break from shoulder intensive technique and restrict your range of motion during forms practice to give it a rest while you keep training. Lower body injury? Avoid putting undue stress on the injured leg by doubling up kicks on one side but be careful that you don’t overwork the healthy limb, as it may then also become injured! These are just a couple examples, but I hope they show that you can keep training with an injury, so long as you are consciously protecting it.

The final “opportunity to adjust” may be to consider a permanent adjustment to the techniques and forms that we train. This is a recommendation for a chronic injury that will either persist for a long time or may never completely heal. What does this look like? Find adjustments that work to not aggravate the injury (e.g. lighter weapons, shorter jumps/not jumping) to keep it from worsening, or further hampering your training. Make sure you always discuss this type of adjustment with Sigung before implementing the change.

Everyone will suffer injuries while they train, I hope this helps you see that an injury does not necessarily have to be the end! Note: Always be sure that instructors are aware of your injuries and limitations.

by Sije Veronica Sas
Fu For You Fall 2024

There comes a time when everyone will lose the motivation to do something they need to do. Whether it is going to work, exercising or just making dinner, sometimes we just don’t want to do it! The same thing can happen to your child regarding their Kung Fu training. After the long summer break, they might find it difficult to resume the busy life of the school year. Even if your child did not take a break this summer, at some point over the year, they too might lose the motivation to practice Kung Fu.

Fortunately, you can always try to motivate your child. One thing you can do is engage your child after class. Find out if they learned anything new that day, or what they enjoyed about the class. You can even ask them to demonstrate some technique for you! If your child wants to grade soon and is lacking the motivation to practice at home, perhaps invite one of their classmates to come practice with them. The two students can help motivate each other to become better. You can also become a role model for your child by starting your own Kung Fu journey (if you haven’t already).

If your child has recently changed classes, it could simply be that they don’t know anyone in their new class. This can be rectified given enough time. Encourage them to talk to their new classmates and try to make a new friend or two. Being in class with friends makes it more enjoyable. From my experience, if your child has some friends they only see in Kung Fu, they might be more willing to go to class to see them. Fortunately, with the end of summer, more students will be returning to the Academy, and your child will have more opportunities to make new friends and become reacquainted with old ones.

Perhaps your child isn’t motivated to come to class because they are frustrated with a particular skill they are trying to learn. If this is the case, encourage them to ask their instructor for some help, either before or during class. It might even be beneficial to book a private class or two. That way your child can work on the specific skill that is frustrating them.

It is important that as a parent, we don’t push our children too hard. Each student progresses at a different rate. If your child isn’t motivated because they are not progressing as fast as they believe they should, try and convince them otherwise! Have them set one small, reasonable goal and
work towards it. When they do reach a milestone or goal, make sure you celebrate it!

There is a big difference between not being motivated to go to Kung fu and not liking Kung Fu. Not being motivated is something that can be changed with a little help, time, and patience. You just need to find out why they lost their motivation!
