by Sigung David Moylan
Fu For You Summer 2024

Bruce Lee said, “A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.” With this mindset, I embrace the journey towards my goals, knowing that the pursuit itself is where the true growth and transformation occur. ~ excerpt from Sifu Bala’s Black Sash grading thesis.

This past Spring was a full one including our Competition Team/tournament season, the annual CKKA Convention Weekend, our 25th Annual In-House Tournament (SIT) and the 45th Annual Karate Maynia. Spring culminated with a small but mighty Advanced grading, which saw the addition of three new brown sashes (Dylan, Upani, Shoja) and a new Sifu (Bala). Furthermore, Sifu Charlie achieved 2nd Degree Black Sash. Witnessing individual progress and the positive way in which people are representing themselves, I feel real pride in the students and instructors of the Academy.

Sifu Bala made WKFA history on May 11th by being the oldest person to achieve a Black Sash (having cleared six decades). While a great milestone, it’s only one of many ways Sifu Bala can inspire us. He approached his entire journey to Black Sash with the utmost humility. He comes to the Academy each day free of ego with an open mind, ready to learn and simply put in the work. Never does he make excuses; he keeps training to the best of his ability, aware of his limitations, but doing what he can, day in and day out.

His class attendance is second to none. At Brown Sash alone, he attended over 700 classes, typically 7 times a week and often twice a day! This is on top of assisting with several classes a week. For the years we had our 6am aikido classes, he rarely missed. Sifu Bala actively takes part and assists in almost every aspect of the Academy. During the challenging years of 2020 to 2022, he was the first person to stick around and grab a mop to lend a hand. His willingness to serve further proves the quality of his character.

Sifu Bala is strong, flexible and vibrant. In the Advanced Junior class he assists with every Saturday morning, he has the lowest centre splits in the kwoon! Beyond his physical traits, his attitude is what exemplifies a true martial artist. He perseveres, taking full ownership for his progress. When he failed his Green Sash grading, he quietly waited until everyone had left to calmly chat about what he needed to address to pass the next time. Then he did just that.

One of the most endearing qualities Sifu Bala brings to the Academy each day is his sense of humour and light heartedness. He’s as well intentioned and gentle as he is physically strong. My teacher described Kung Fu as “serious fun”. Sifu Bala gets the fun part and truly savours the journey without taking himself too seriously. The serious part is him putting in consistent effort. My sincerest congratulations to you Sifu Bala – welcome to the Black Sash Team!

You are probably all familiar with the term, “you can talk the talk; but can you walk the walk?” In other words, can you take the action to back up the words that you speak, or, one of my favorite expressions, don’t tell me; show me.

I was honoured to be asked to center judge sparring and forms for the Black Sash division at SIT 2024, along with fellow judges Sibok Eric, Sifu Mark, Sifu Jim, and Sifu Syd. It’s hard to believe that Sifu Eric and I centered rings for the first WKFA in-house tournament 25 years ago. Those that know me know that I am not a big fan of martial arts tournaments, mostly because they are often poorly organized and/or poorly run. This tournament is, and always has been different. It is well organized and well run. Judges are thoroughly trained on the tournament rules with an abundance of guidelines available during the tournament. Thanks and congratulations to all the tournament organizers, judges, score keepers, and competitors.

Getting back to the theme of this article, I was extremely proud of the number of Black Sash instructors that not only dedicated time to judging, but also to train and compete in the Black Sash division of the tournament. You were well prepared and not only demonstrated an abundance of tournament skill but truly proved that you are role models for everyone that watched the division. Many schools preach these skills to their students, but you showed students and parents alike that you walk the walk. Judging the Black Sash forms divisions was very difficult and often the smallest of details made the difference between 1st and last. Things like, was the back leg straight, what was the trailing hand doing, was the weapon striking to the correct target, was the weapon fully under control, and finally, did the competitor exhibit sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and Kung Fu spirit?

So even if you didn’t place in the medals, take pride in the fact that you may have only been one misstep away. Any of you could perform in the Black Sash division of any tournament and bring home some hardware.

WKFA is fortunate to have so many dedicated talented martial artists that are true role models to all our students. You not only talk the talk but walk the walk. Congratulations to you all.

by Chantal Moylan
Fu For You Summer 2024

Summer is usually seen as a time for relaxation, vacations, and a break from your usual routines. While taking breaks can be important, practicing your Kung Fu during the summer is an excellent opportunity to deepen your skills and improve both your physical and mental health. It also gives you a chance to enjoy the weather, keep in touch with friends and pass the time in a productive way!

Practicing Kung Fu will help you stay strong, flexible, and full of energy. I find if I take too long of a break from Kung Fu, it makes classes a lot more difficult when I return. During the summer, you probably have a lot more time – which also means you have a lot more time to practice. So instead of spending all day in front of the TV or playing video games, take some time to practice your Kung Fu. It gets you moving and keeps your body healthy. You can also practice outside during the summer, so you get lots of fresh air and sunshine while you practice – just remember to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen!

Throughout the school year, you’ve learned some pretty cool Kung Fu techniques and forms. If you decide to take a break from Kung Fu and stop practicing during the summer, you might forget them. Then, you will have to relearn everything and it will take longer for you to advance. But if you keep practicing over the summer, you’ll get even better! You’ll remember all your techniques and forms and maybe even learn new ones during classes. To do this, you can make a schedule or a chart to help you keep track of your practice. By the time school starts again, you’ll already be better!

Because you have so much extra time during the summer, you might get bored or find you have too much energy. Practicing your Kung Fu can help with that. Kung Fu isn’t just about getting exercise; it’s also about using your mind. It improves your memory and focus because you must remember all your techniques and requirements. Practicing Kung Fu helps you stay focused and calm, which is helpful, especially when you have parents who still have to work, and you have nothing to do. Even if you decide you don’t want to practice your techniques, you can practice your meditation. This can help you feel more relaxed.

When you think of summer, you probably think of hanging out with friends and Kung Fu can be a part of that. You can get together with your Kung Fu friends to practice or spend time with them in class. Training together makes Kung Fu even more exciting and fun. Our Kung Fu school also has a really fun summer camp you and your friends can join and you might even make some new friends!

So, make sure you keep up with your Kung Fu over the summer so you remember your techniques, spend time with friends and get outside. Enjoy your summer!

by Sifu Charlie Romeo
Fu For You Summer 2024

In my previous article, Weapons 101: Weapons Are Not Toys, I discussed the importance of possessing the correct mindset when using weapons in Kung Fu. Having control and not using weapons as toys are crucial first steps in wielding weapons in our training. This second part of the article is going to dive further into weapon use for more experienced students. The information here may be more applicable to our advanced students, but it can still be a beneficial read for novice and intermediate students to get excited for what lies ahead.

A great drill for testing your understanding of a weapon is to wield it in one of your open hand forms, such as using double daggers in the tiger form. While some small (or drastic) variations will need to be made, the foundation of the form must remain the same. This is not a drill that will come easy; some moves will work well, and others will take serious thought and adaptation to appropriately represent the form as well as the weapon. It’s important to not rush this drill, but instead take the time to understand how your weapon can be used effectively and adapt as needed.

We can often get so comfortable with a weapon that we forget to think about what exactly we’re doing in our movements. This is a result of muscle memory, which while not a bad thing, can lead to a lack of intent. One way to avoid this is to try working your drills and forms with the weapon in the opposite hand. You will find that swinging a tonfa with your non-dominant hand requires a lot more thought processing than you have needed since you first started using the weapon (this, of course, is less true for the lefties out there). When you switch the weapon back to your right hand, begin to think more about the intent of the weapon rather than wielding it through muscle memory and habit.

By the time you reach the highest junior ranks, you will learn to use a minimum of 5-6 weapons through learning your curriculum forms. Each one of these weapons requires its own commitment to deeply understand, and they are all used very differently from one another. As an advanced junior student, it is important to go back to revisit your previous weapons and re-evaluate your understanding of them. A Jr Brown Sash should have a far better understanding of the staff compared to a Jr Orange Sash. Take the time to break down your weapons forms – alone, with a classmate, or with an instructor – and ask yourself: Are there any moves that I don’t know the purpose of? Do I have any questions about the weapon I’m using?

Revisiting previous weapons as you advance can help you become a better student and will also help you as you begin your journey as a Leadership Team member. Control of a weapon is important, but as you advance, a more in-depth understanding is expected as you continue your Kung Fu journey.

by Sifu D’arcy Langois
Fu For You Summer 2024

As Martial Artists, we tend to be more physically active than the average person in our community. Within the Adult program, we are encouraged to attend three classes per week, giving us a solid three hours of guaranteed workout (not counting personal training). There is even a solid number of people in the student body who blow that three class average out of the water; training four, five, six or more times per week, and that is incredible! It’s great seeing a group of people so interested in, and dedicated to the art that they are willing to make that much time in their busy schedule to attend so many classes. That amount of training, however, does come with a cost; one usually paid in torn muscles, loose joints, and an overall feeling of fatigue. So here is a friendly reminder: DON’T SKIP RECOVERY DAYS!

For those of you that know me, this may seem a little bit ironic coming from me, but that’s why I felt the need to emphasize this point. Your body and your mind both need time to recover. As always, a recovery day can mean different things to different people, so what I say here isn’t a catch-all. This is meant to get you thinking about the concept of recovery days, and why you should be weaving them into your training regime.

Experts recommend taking at least one day off per week in your daily workout routine, to help build your strength and prevent injuries. What does that look like? That’s completely up to you, but it should be a break from your normal workout pattern (so yes, it may mean not attending a class on a day). Taking a day off of our strenuous, anaerobic style of activity, and instead doing light cardio (e.g. jogging, swimming, or a bike ride), or mobility focused activities (e.g. yoga, or stretching) is a great way to promote healing, while keeping your body moving.

On top of taking that important recovery day to heal, cooldown stretching after every strenuous workout should be a priority. A handful of minutes performing some static stretching (focused on the muscle groups you just abused) can go a long way to making your day after the workout more pleasant. Stretching eases the muscle fibres, helps work some of that lactic acid build up out, and promotes the healing process to keep you feeling fit the next day. Making this a priority can also reduce the number of recovery days you are forced to take.

Finally, sometimes your brain just needs a break. If you find yourself getting frustrated over and over in class, it might be a good idea to miss a class or two to re-center yourself. Take those recovery days to help reset your mind, before coming back focused (hopefully), and ready to continue your Kung Fu journey.

Don’t skip recovery days! And see you in the Kwoon!

by Sije Veronica Sas
Fu For You Summer 2024

Originally, I had another topic planned for this newsletter. However, after helping with the Intermediate/Advanced Youth and Junior combined class a few weekends ago, I thought talking about advancing into the next age program would be more appropriate. This is a topic we are currently discussing in my own household – my daughter is now eligible for the Adult Program, and yet is hesitant to join.

Waterloo Kung-Fu Academy has four different programs, each is designed for a specific age range. However, it is not necessary to move to the next program immediately after your child’s birthday. There are certain times in your child’s training that might make the transition easier. If your child is looking to grade soon, after grading is a great time to switch. Depending on the rank, they might have to switch classes anyways! If you’re in doubt of how close your child is to grading, ask your child’s Sifu or Sigung to see if it is something to strive for. Another great time to transition is the start of the new school year.

Ranks are slightly different between programs. When your child moves into the next age group, you might notice that their rank will decrease. A Youth Blue Belt moving into the Junior Program will become a Junior Green Sash. Likewise, a Junior Green Sash moving into the Adult Program will become an Adult Orange Sash. This does not mean your child won’t be learning new curriculum! The Programs are designed so that your child will still be learning new forms and techniques. The ranking system can be confusing when you see many colours of belts and sashes in the same class, but if you have any questions about your child’s rank, please ask an instructor or visit our ranking sashes and belts webpage for more details.

If your child is like mine, they might have many different reasons why they don’t want to transition into the next program. The first reason I got was “I want to grade first!”. However, now that she’s thinking of grading soon, she doesn’t want to switch immediately after. Another reason I got is “I don’t want to leave my friends!”. Unfortunately, this is a fact of changing programs. If one of your child’s friends are also close to moving up, encourage them to move together. Students can also plan to attend the Sunday family class together, where all ages and ranks are welcome. In my case, I’m giving my child a deadline of Sept 1 to move to the Adult Program. Hopefully knowing the transition is coming will make it easier.

Each Program at the Waterloo Kung-Fu Academy is designed for that specific age group, so there are advantages to moving into the next program. Your child will be in a class with kids their own age, or slightly older (unless it’s in the adult program, where it’s 15+). The curriculum will change slightly, and expectations will also be more demanding, reflecting on the growing focus, maturity, and capabilities of the student.
