The Night Before Kung Fu Christmas

Fu For You – Winter 2025-26

This is a copy of The Night Before Kung Fu Christmas from December 1995, the year Sibok Eric and I earned our Black Sash, followed by 2006, the year Sigung Dave took over the reins of WKFA.  How many of you remember people from back then?

T’was the night before Christmas and all through the school, not a creature was stirring, it’s Christmas you fool.  The students were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of gradings danced in their heads.  Their stockings were hung from the mirrors with care in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

Craig in his hardhat; Sifu Scott with his axe had just settled their brains for a long winters nap.  When up on the roof their arose such a clatter Scott sprang from his bed to see what was the matter.  Away to the window he sprang with a flash.  Tripped over Craig and fell with a crash.

The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow gave a lustre of midday to objects below.  When what to his wondering eyes did appear but our own Sifu Ti, with a bad limp I fear.  As he drew in his head and was turning around he was struck from behind and was back on the ground.  As he opened his eyes and started to focus Sifu Bob smiled and said “Your stance must be rooted”.

He was dressed all in black from his head to his foot, his hair it was hidden underneath his black hood.  A bundle of weapons he had flung on his back and said “Time to train.” as he opened his sack.

“Master Pan created a monster!” Scott said with surprise, as Sifu took a great spear and a small pair of Sai’s.  He whirled and gyrated so fast Sifu Scott couldn’t see, then he said with a smile “Please do just like me”.

Just when he thought he was nearing his end, he opened his eyes and could not comprehend.  He was drenched in cold sweat from his head to his foot.  His hands blackened with tree bark and looking like soot.  Remembering Craig he felt a cold shiver.  Wood weekend is fun but I cannot remember. I heard him exclaim as he rested his eyes “Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night”.

Sihing Cory with his new toque, Sihing Greg with his sword, looked at each other and said “Man am I bored.”  And then on the road there arose such a clatter they sprang from the floor to see what was the matter.  Away to the window they flew in a flash, tripped over Craig and came down with a crash.

The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow gave a luster of mid day to objects below.  Then what to their wondering eyes did appear but good ole Tom Prell with the last pint of beer.  As they drew in their heads and were turning around, they were smacked from behind and fell back to the ground.

As they opened their eyes and started to focus, Sifu Dave smiled and said, “Your stance must be rooted.”  He was dressed all in black from his head to his foot.  His short hair was hidden beneath his black hood.  A bundle of weapons he had flung on his back and said, “Time to train” as he opened his pack.

“So much for rest” our boys said with surprise, as Sifu grabbed a long staff and a small pair of sais.  He whirled and gyrated like a hummingbird on caffeine and then turned to our boys and said, “Do just like me.”

Just as he thought his end must be coming, Greg opened his eyes and felt his heart pounding.  He was drenched all in sweat from his head to his foot with his fist clenched tightly around Cory’s nose. Remembering Tom, he gave a cold shiver and looked to the sky with a bit of a fright and said, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
