Please consider supporting local new Syrian families by purchasing gift cards from Walmart, Food Basics, Ammar Halal Meat, and Kiski Halal Meat stores. Cards may be dropped off at WKFA to be distributed to families.

As many of you are aware, over the past several months Canada has embraced thousands of Syrian refugees. Several families have been located into our K-W area and only a few weeks ago the last family was located into their new home.

During this upcoming year the focus will be to assist people to learn English and about the local area. Families receive monthly benefits to help with food and basic needs. Several instructors and students at WKFA are involved, through varying organizations, in assisting in these efforts.

Areej Hamad, a mother of WKFA students and a WKFA student herself in our Friday Women’s Program, has been working for months assisting our new families through The Muslim Association of Canada (MAC), Embrace Syria Program. Areej has brought to our attention that now that basic housing has been provided, there is a need to continue to assist the families in fulfilling basic needs, such as groceries and other necessities. Areej has suggested if anyone wishes to assist, please purchase gift cards from Walmart, Food Basics, Ammar Halal Meat, and Kiski Halal Meat stores. These gift cards can be delivered to WKFA. They will be picked up and distributed to families in need of extra support.

If you are interested, you can drop cards in the WKFA office; please address them to the attention of Areej Hamad c/o Sifu Patti. If you have any questions, please contact Sifu Patti directly. As the year goes on there may be a need for different items and we will keep you posted.

Thank you for keeping our newest community members in your thoughts and hearts.

Warmest regards,
Areej, Sifu Patti and Sifu David
